GoPro makes 4 different remotes: The Remote, Smart Remote, Volta grip, and the Quik app. And there are many third-party remotes that also work with GoPro cameras. This GoPro remote compatibility guide details which remote works with each GoPro camera.
The newest GoPro remote (The Remote) is compatible with Hero12 Black, Hero11 Black (and Mini), Hero10 Black (and Bones), Hero9 Black, GoPro Max, and Hero8 Black. The other GoPro remotes include the Smart Remote, the Volta, the Quik app, and 3rd party remotes.

GoPro Remote Compatibility by Remote Model
1. The Remote (7 Models)
The Remote by GoPro was released in December 2020. And it is currently compatible with 7 GoPro cameras.

2. Volta Grip (7 Models)
The Volta grip is a combination tripod-grip-powerbank and GoPro remote. Volta is currently compatible with 3 GoPro cameras.

Using a GoPro remote is a good alternative to GoPro voice commands.
3. Quik App (16+ Models)
The Quik app by GoPro is an app for your mobile device. Quik is compatible with almost all GoPro cameras, going back to the vintage Hero3 and Hero2 cameras.

The Smart Remote by GoPro was released on November 21, 2012. And it is currently compatible with 7 GoPro cameras.

The Smart Remote is almost identical in size to the newer The Remote. It has 3 buttons on front, with an LCD screen. The Smart Remote has a proprietary charging cable.
While this has been discontinued on gopro.com, it is still available on Amazon and some other online vendors.
5. Third Party Remotes
There are dozens of GoPro remotes by other manufacturers. Some of the popular brands include Telesin (compatible with Hero11/10/9/8) and Suptig (compatible with Hero8/7/6/5/4/3, Max, and Fusion).
The features and compatibility depend on the remote model and your camera model. Make sure to choose a reputable brand to avoid frustration.
