GoPro Comparison Guide: 26 Models / 28 Differences Compared

Which GoPro camera has the features you need? With so many models, it can be hard to compare and sort out the differences. In this GoPro comparison guide, you’ll learn about the differences between all the models. We cover the newest Hero12 Black back to Hero3 cameras.

And of course, we use lots of charts and lists. Want to dive into a specific feature set? Nice! We have articles and guides on the top GoPro features so you can learn more about voice control, webcams, battery life, audio, etc.

GoPro Comparison Guide

I know, it can be confusing to sort out all the models. I bought my first GoPro back in 2012. And I’ve been using (and writing about) them ever since. And the models and specs still confuse me.

Since 2012, GoPro has released between 2 and 4 new camera models yearly.

In this post, you’ll learn about the basic differences between the three types of GoPro cameras. Then I compare all 26 models with their 28 unique features. And then I cover each model in detail so you can see what you’re getting with a specific camera.

But first, which is the best GoPro camera?

Best GoPro Camera? Hero12 Black

It’s good to compare different models and features. But if you’re just here to get the best GoPro camera, I might be able to save you some time.

If you’re wondering which GoPro is the best camera, you should get the Hero12 Black.

See the current price of Hero12 Black.

The Hero12 Black is my favorite GoPro so far. Here’s why.

  1. Shoots 5.3K video at 60 frames per second (and 4K at 120 fps).
  2. Shoots a range of photo bursts from 3 images in 1 second to 30 images in 10 seconds
  3. Has super-smooth image stabilization technology with Hypersmooth 6.0
  4. Other features include TimeWarp 3.0, 8X Slo-Mo, waterproof to 33 ft, and better low-light capabilities.
  5. Can be used as a webcam – no mods required.
  6. Optional Media Mod adds directional mic with wind suppression, additional mic input, micro HMDI output, and 2 cold shoe mounts (for lights, mics or stands). It also comes with 2 onboard mics, voice control, GPS, and super slow motion video in HD (1080p at 240fps).

When it comes to technology, I’m a big fan of buying the best I can afford. But if you’re on a budget, you should get the Hero11 – it’s almost as good and still an amazing camera.

Okay, now on to the full detail of the post:

Basic GoPro Differences: 3 Types of Cameras

To begin, let’s compare the three different styles of GoPro cameras. I’ve ordered them from most to least popular.

  • Hero: This is the most popular, and most recognizable, GoPro camera. It is a small rectangular camera. It is the mid-range for cost and size. All the newer models come with a LCD touch screen.
  • Session: This is the entry-level GoPro type. It has limited function, is lightweight, and lower cost. The Session is shaped like a cube and comes with just two buttons. No screen.
  • 360 Degree Cameras: The Max, and older Fusion, are the largest, heaviest, and most expensive GoPro camera category. These cameras are unique because they shoot 360-degree video footage. While it can produce some crazy immersive footage, it requires more skill when shooting and editing.

GoPro Naming Confusion

And while GoPro knows how to make a great camera, they aren’t very good at naming them. For example, they have two cameras named Hero (released 4 years apart). Plus two more named Hero+. And two Hero3 Black and two Hero3 Silver models.

Of course, if you look closely, you can tell them apart. Sometimes they add a “+” or the release year in brackets. Silly, but I guess it works.

To help, I created this guide. In part, to help myself keep things straight. I hope this will also help you to sort out the differences and make the right choice for your adventure.

GoPro Ranking: Best to Basic

To help you make some sense of all these models, here are our rankings of the best GoPro models.

Flagship GoPro Models

Here are the flagship models, at the time of release.

  • Hero12 Black (September 2023) Includes the Creator Edition
  • Hero11 Black (September 2022) Includes the Creator Edition
  • Hero10 Black (September 2021)
  • Hero9 Black (September 2020)
  • Hero8 Black (October 2019)
  • GoPro Max (October 2019)
  • Hero7 Black (September 2018)
  • Hero6 Black (September 2017)
  • GoPro Fusion (November 2017)
  • Hero5 Black (September 2016)
  • Hero4 Black (September 2014)
  • Hero3 Black (October 2012)

Mid Range GoPro Models

  • Hero11 Black Mini (November 2022)
  • Hero7 Silver and White (September 2018)
  • Hero5 Session (September 2016)
  • Hero4 Silver (September 2014)
  • Hero4 Session (September 2014)
  • Hero3+ Black (October 2013)
  • Hero3 Silver (October 2012)

Basic GoPro Models

These are pretty basic models that are intentionally lacking in common features.

  • Hero (2018) (March 2018)
  • Hero+ (October 2015)
  • Hero+ LCD (October 2015)
  • Hero (September 2014)
  • Hero3+ Silver (October 2013)
  • Hero3 White (October 2012)

As you can tell from above, typically the Black model is the flagship camera for GoPro. The unnumbered Hero series are typically very basic.

Ranking cameras can be pretty subjective. Disagree with something on the list? Let me know in the comments.

Thursday 4th of March 2021

is there any way of making a hardwired connection to a utility socket so that the camera can be operational all the time? if i mount the camera within 5 feet of an electrical socket it would be more convenient to have it plugged in. security cameras have this feature but their resolution is not so good. if i want to temporarily move a camera then i can use the battery.

thanks
