Why Choose the Insta360 X5? 6 Key Advantages

The Insta360 X5 delivers compelling advantages over the DJI Osmo360 that directly impact real-world usability.

  1. Its replaceable lens design solves the biggest vulnerability of 360 cameras: lens damage. The replaceable lens allows users to swap damaged lenses instantly without costly repairs or downtime.
  2. Triple AI Chip system with AdaptiveTone technology automatically optimizes exposure and details based on viewing perspective, delivering consistently high-quality footage across all lighting conditions without manual adjustments.
  3. Comprehensive user experience features like Twist to Shoot, automatic intro/outro trimming, and smart accessory detection eliminate common frustrations and streamline the shooting workflow.
  4. The X5 offers superior app performance with 15% faster export times, advanced AI editing tools, and seamless stitching that avoids the color inconsistencies plaguing the Osmo360.
  5. The Insta360+ cloud service (included) provides 1TB of free storage, automatic backup, and cloud-based editing capabilities that the Osmo360 completely lacks.
  6. The X5 delivers longer battery life (208 vs 190 minutes) and better audio quality with built-in wind protection, crucial for extended outdoor shoots.

These advantages combine to create a more reliable, user-friendly, and feature-rich 360 camera experience that reduces friction at every step of the creative process.

7 Key Similarities: Insta360 X5 vs DJI Osmo 360

Both cameras share several core features:

  1. 8K 30fps recording capability
  2. 360-degree video capture
  3. Low light modes (PureVideo for X5, SuperNight for Osmo360)
  4. Basic stabilization and stitching
  5. Gesture and voice control
  6. Compatible with editing software like Premiere and After Effects
  7. Waterproof capabilities (X5: 15m, Osmo 360: 10m)

8 Major Differences: Insta360 X5 vs DJI Osmo 360

1. Lens Replacement

Why This Matters: While all cameras could suffer a damaged lens, none are as vulnerable as a 360 camera. The lenses protrude on both sides. If you use your 360 camera (sad to say), you will damage the lens. And even minor scratches will affect your image quality.

X5 Advantages:

  • Users can swap damaged lenses themselves – in just a couple of minutes.
  • Because these can be ordered in advance, you will have virtually no downtime.

Osmo 360 Limitations:

  • Non-replaceable lenses – require returning to DJI for repair if damaged.
  • Expect to wait 6-15 days. Cost is USD$25 for single lens replacement and USD$41 for dual lens replacement. Don’t forget to allow time and cost for shipping to/from DJI.

Can you use lens protectors? Yes, both models have these. But adding plastic lens covers to your fancy 8K 360-degree camera will impact image quality.

What about lens fogging in the Osmo 360? While I haven’t noticed this yet, other creators are having trouble with the lens fogging on the interior surface. This is not something to overlook. Until this is fixed, this issue will ruin your footage. Here’s Ben Claremont explaining:

2. Image Processing Architecture

X5: Triple AI Chip system

  • 1/1.28″ sensor
  • Two Pro Imaging Chips for noise processing and color adjustment
  • 5nm AI Chip for stitching, stabilization, and highlight recognition

Osmo 360: Single large sensor approach

  • 1/1.1″ sensor (larger than X5)
  • 10-bit recording capability
  • Less sophisticated processing pipeline

Test Footage: Insta360 X5 / DJI Osmo 360 Compared

While specs and features are great to consider, what really matters is the actual image quality. There was no additional editing performed on these images, aside from any auto in-camera tweaks. The only editing was size optimizing (for web) in Photoshop. No color bumps or filters applied.

During my comparison, I’ve tested both cameras in a variety of settings. Each of the following images was shot the same day, within a few seconds of each other. Which do you prefer?

Images were shot in Antigonish, NS (Canada).

3. Recording Specifications

X5 Specs:

  • Max Resolution: 8K 30fps
  • Slow motion: 4K 120fps
  • 8-bit recording and I-Log
  • 88-minute battery life at 8K 30fps
  • 208 minutes battery life at 5.7K 24fps with Endurance mode

Osmo 360 Specs:

  • Max Resolution: 8K 50fps (higher frame rate)
  • Slow motion: 4K 100fps
  • 10-bit recording capability & D-Log M
  • 92-minute battery life at 8K 30fps
  • 190-minute battery life at 6K 24fps with Endurance mode
  • 105GB internal storage vs X5’s external storage only

Is the Osmo 360 internal storage good? While the DJI Osmo 360 has 105GB of internal storage, this isn’t very much when recording 8K footage. In fact, memory will record less than 70 minutes of 8K30 footage – the internal memory will run out before the first battery does. It is a decent backup, but you’ll still need to purchase one (or many) memory cards.

4. Smart Features & User Experience

X5 Features:

  • AdaptiveTone: Automatically adjusts exposure and details based on perspective
  • InstaFrame Mode: Creates flat videos for instant sharing
  • Twist to Shoot: Start/stop recording with a simple twist
  • Skip Intro/Outro: Automatically trims unnecessary footage
  • Smart Preview: AI-selected highlights in thumbnails
  • Advanced reframing tools: Motion control, joystick control, preset perspectives, DeepTrack 3.0

For editing on PC, you can use the Insta360 Studio. I’ve used this for years and it just gets better.

Osmo360 Limitations:

  • No equivalent to AdaptiveTone
  • Reframing options include Quick Framing and GyroFrame in DJI Mimo app
  • No automatic intro/outro trimming
  • Slower AI editing performance
  • Basic preview interface

5. Cloud Services

Once you start shooting in 360, you’ll notice how many and how large the files are. To help you manage this data (and keep it safe), many manufacturers offer cloud-based storage. These are great for storing, protecting, and sharing your footage.

X5: Insta360+ Cloud Service

  • 1TB free cloud storage for 1 year (worth $107.88)
  • Automatic backup from the camera
  • Cloud-based editing
  • Easy sharing with customizable links

Osmo 360: No cloud service integration

6. App Performance

Both cameras have compatible apps (Insta360 App and DJI Mimo) and desktop editors (Insta360 Studio and DJI Studio).

X5 App Advantages: Insta360 App

  • Faster video exporting (15% faster on average)
  • More advanced AI editing algorithms
  • Better stitching with consistent results
  • Color Plus enhancement
  • Chromatic aberration correction
  • Effects and creative templates (Shot Lab, Flash Cut)

The app is limited to a maximum of 60GB files. I learned this when I tried to edit a 90-minute file that was over 80GB. But after importing into Insta360 Studio, I was able to edit and export.

Osmo 360 App: DJI Mimo

  • Slower export times, especially with High-Precision Smart Stitching
  • More basic editing capabilities
  • Visible stitching issues in some scenarios
  • Limited creative features

These differences make sense, considering that the X5 is a fifth-generation camera by Insta360. And the Osmo 360 is a first-generation camera by DJI. The Mimo app will likely improve in the coming years, but right now, the advantage goes to Insta360.

There have been more than a few comments online – and I’m sure you’ll see it too – noticing how similar the DJI tools look compared to the Insta360 ones. Of course, the Insta360 released first, and it appears to have inspired DJI in the interface and user experience of their software.

7. Accessory Ecosystem: X5 vs Osmo 360

Insta360 X5: Comprehensive ecosystem

  • Magnetic mounting system
  • ND filters, invisible dive cases
  • Extensive third-party compatibility (Cardo, Sena, Garmin, Suunto)
  • Specialized mounts for motorcycles, bikes, water sports, and winter sports

Osmo360: Limited accessory options. This will likely improve as the DJI line matures.

8. Audio Performance

X5: Built-in wind guard for improved audio recording

Osmo360: Standard microphone with issues in windy conditions (audio often becomes unusable)

Comparison Summary

Choose Insta360 X5 if you prioritize:

  • Lens replaceability
  • Advanced AI processing and automatic optimizations
  • Better audio quality in challenging conditions, like with the built-in wind guard.
  • Cloud integration and faster editing workflow
  • Comprehensive accessory ecosystem
  • User-friendly experience and convenience features

Choose DJI Osmo360 if you prioritize:

  • Higher maximum frame rates (8K 50fps vs 30fps)
  • 10-bit recording for more post-production flexibility
  • Larger sensor size
  • Built-in storage (105GB)
  • Lower weight (183g vs 200g)

The X5 appears positioned as the more user-friendly, feature-rich option with better overall ecosystem support, while the Osmo360 focuses more on raw technical specifications like higher frame rates and bit depth.

Overheating Issues? X5 vs Osmo 360 Compared

Action cameras have struggled with overheating issues for years. How do these cameras fare on a hot, sunny August day in Nova Scotia?

Overheating Test Conditions: Earlier today, I tested both cameras in stationary, continuous recording in 8K30fps.

  • Results: No overheating issues during extended outdoor recording in either the Insta360 X5 or the DJI Osmo360
  • Video Resolution: 8K30fps
  • Temperature: During the test period, the temperature ranged from 24-26°C (75-79°F).
  • Positioning: For the first hour, cameras were in the shade. During the final portion of the test, the cameras were in direct sunlight.
  • Time: The test ran from 10:30 am to 12:10 pm. Shot on August 14.

Equal Heat Disipation Performance: Both cameras demonstrate reliable thermal management during intensive recording scenarios. Neither camera showed overheating problems during real-world testing, making this a non-differentiating factor between the models.

The absence of overheating and crashing action cameras is a welcome change. GoPro cameras have famously struggled with overheating issues for years.

To reduce temperature issues further, Insta360 released a white version of the X5. If you’ll be in hot climates, this might be a good option.
